This study aims to conduct a needs analysis to provide foundational data for developing a Korean language textbook using generative artificial intelligence (AI) for Mongolian university students majoring in Korean. A survey was administered to 128 students from the National University of Mongolia (NUM) and the International University of Ulaanbaatar (IUU), examining their learning purposes, experiences with existing textbooks, expectations for new materials, and perceptions of digital tools and generative AI. The results indicate that students’ primary motivations for learning Korean include studying abroad in Korea, interest in Korean culture, and preparation for Korean-related careers. Learners expressed strong needs for improving speaking, vocabulary, and writing skills, and reported limitations in existing textbooks such as insufficient practice activities, lack of cultural relevance, and low engagement. Participants showed clear preferences for communication-oriented activities, translation exercises, and detailed grammar explanations. Furthermore, most respondents reported prior experience using generative AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, mainly for writing support, translation, and error correction. Students also expected AI-integrated textbooks to include personalized feedback, grammar explanations, and interactive dialogue activities. These findings suggest directions for developing locally tailored Korean language textbooks supported by generative AI to enhance learner autonomy and communicative competence.
Sodnomdorj, Enkhchimeg⋅Do, Sungkyoung. 2025. Developing Locally Customized Korean Language Textbooks Using Generative AI: A Foundational Study on Current Status and Needs Analysis in Mongolian Universities. Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, 79. 309-337. This study aims to provide foundational data for developing a locally customized Korean language textbook that leverages generative AI, reflecting the changing landscape of Korean education at Mongolian universities in the AI era. To this end, the study analyzed the current state of Korean education and the perceptions of both instructors and learners. The analysis revealed that students effectively utilized AI for self-directed learning, while instructors generally held a positive view of its educational potential. However, concerns regarding over-reliance and misuse highlighted the need for ethical guidelines for learners and specialized training for instructors. Based on these findings, this study proposes a development direction that includes a curriculum structure suitable for the local environment, AI-integrated tasks, intercultural content, and ethical guidelines. This research is significant as it provides a critical foundation for designing future curricula and locally customized textbooks, thus paving the way for further studies in the evolving landscape of overseas Korean education.
