The Secret History of the Mongols is a priceless work of Mongolian literature, and an invaluable source of history that records the events of the life and reign of Chinggis Khaan, his successors, as well as over 400 historical figures. The work also chronicles the foundation and formation of the Ikh Mongol Ulus and all its associated foreign relations and foreign campaigns, the lifestyle and culture of the nomadic people including their language, beliefs, and rituals, and touches upon historical events not only pertinent to Mongolia but the greater Eurasian continent. Thus, the Secret History of the Mongols is a stand-alone and incomparable work that not only traverses the history, language, and culture of the medieval Mongol period, but acts as a conduit of conveying data and knowledge that is still relevant today. Following the 2023 initiative issued by the President of Mongolia to translate the Secret History of the Mongols we, the translation team, used a methodological approach in translating of the Secret History of the Mongols into English that emphasized re-interpreting the socio-cultural nuances and elements of the original manuscript which other translation versions overlooked. Specifically, elements that reflected the period’s nomadic heritage and background. As a result, this translation effort was able to successfully introduce into scholarship new interpretations of the original text that reflect the unique thinking, concepts, traditions, and customs of the Mongolian nomadic people and help contextualize historical perceptions.
This study explores the perception of translation competence among translators and foreign language teachers in Mongolia. It is done by providing empirical evidence for the translation competence model and intercultural competence model. 260 participants completed questionnaires and translated two texts in direct and inverse translation. Results suggest that translators and teachers view translation as a dynamic rather than a static concept. Differences in the acceptability average were observed between direct and inverse translations. The study also reveals insufficiencies in the strategic sub-competence, which compensates for other insufficient sub-competences. The research does not conclusively support the interrelated and hierarchal nature of translation sub-competences proposed by PACTE.
